Adekunle Gold Drops His Flawless Sophomore Album, 'About 30'
From the very second Adekunle Gold signified the end of his exceptional Gold era – with the release of the Moelogo-assisted gem, "Only Girl" – we’ve been impatiently anticipating the release of his second album.
Well, after a few frustrating delays, that moment is finally here, and we are happy to report that About 30 is everything we hoped it would be: A brilliant follow-up which, against all odds, doesn’t suffer from the dreaded sophomore slump.
Just like the "Ire" singer hinted, the 14-track LP skillfully tackles issues most of us deal with as we get older – from escaping toxic relationships to handling crippling loneliness. The album is not all gloom, however, as he still delivers the type of dreamy love songs that won us all over in the first place.
While there are not a lot of featured acts on the album, all the artists who do make the cut – Dyo, Seun Kuti, Flavour and the Lagos Community Gospel Choir – are exquisitely utilized. Even Simi, who isn’t officially listed as a collaborator, lends her inimitable voice to the stellar "Pablo Alakori".
As for picking About 30's standout tracks, we feel tempted to simply give that honour to the entire LP and call it a day. While that would be true, there are still a couple songs that manage to shine a tad brighter than the rest: "Down With You", "Yoyo" and "Damn, Delilah".
Don't waste any more time, listen to the flawless About 30 below:
