Nigerian Freestyle Wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye Qualifies For The 2020 Olympics
She won bronze at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships!
The 2019 World Wrestling Championships is still ongoing in Kazakhstan, and Nigeria has already left a noticeable mark in the competition. On Wednesday, Odunayo Adekuoroye defeated North Korea's Sun Jong in the quarterfinal to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.
Although she later lost in the semifinal to Japan's Risako Kawai, the 25-year-old made sure she didn't leave the competition without a medal. She was put up for the bronze medal against Moldova's Anastasia Nichita, and she ended up beating her opponent 10-0.
So far, she's the only athlete to win a medal out of the six Nigerians currently competing in Kazakhstan. With silver and bronze medals from the 2015 and 2017 editions, it means Adekuoroye now boasts of three medals from the championships — a rather impressive record.
This won't be Adekuoroye's first time at the Olympics. She participated in the 2016 edition, where she, unfortunately, crashed out in the quarterfinals. Tokyo 2020 will be her second appearance, and we're rooting for the gifted athlete to go all the way this time around.
