Nigeria Women's Bobsled Team Has Qualified For The 2018 Winter Olympics

More than a year ago, Seun AdigunNgozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga started nurturing the dream of becoming the first bobsledders out of Africa to take part in the Winter Olympics. Their target year was 2018.

And, to prove that dreams really do come true, they’ve just qualified for next year’s Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea where they’ll not only be the first athletes to fly the Nigerian flag but will also be hailed as the first bobsled team ever to qualify from Africa!

The three wonder women, who were once track and field athletes, made history yesterday by completing the fifth of their required five qualifying races.

Speaking with KweséESPN, Adigun said:

“This is a huge milestone for sports in Nigeria. Nothing makes me prouder than to know that I can play a small role in creating opportunities for winter sports to take place in Nigeria.”

It’s not surprising that these women are making history every inch of the way. Bobsled is pretty new to a majority of Nigerians. But this isn’t to make light of their achievements so far. They were determined enough to take up their passion, and, with a much-needed sponsorship from VISA and American sportswear manufacturer, Under Armour, they’re now kicking ass for themselves and for Nigeria.

With this spot now secured, Adigun, Onwumere and Omeoga are focusing on becoming the best athletes the Winter Olympics have ever witnessed. And we’re dead sure that’s another dream waiting to come true at the games.
