This Kenyan Couple Stole The Show At The Paris Marathon
The Paris International Marathon takes place in April every year. This year’s edition, which held last Sunday, didn’t just witness the usual participation of Kenyans. This time, there was a Kenyan couple, Paul Lonyangata and Purity Rionoripo, who won the race and our hearts at the same time.
Africa News reports that, at the marathon, Lonyangata surpassed his personal record by finishing in two hours, six minutes and ten seconds – ahead of the first runner-up who was 46 seconds behind. The 24-year-old’s success in racing started at the World Junior Championships in Athletics in 2010 where he won bronze. Since then has won three road races: the Tegla Loroupe Peace Race in 2011, the Lisbon Marathon in 2013 and the Shanghai Marathon in 2015.
In the women’s category, 23-year-old Rionoripo set a new record in the marathon by finishing in two hours, twenty minutes and fifty-five seconds. It was a strong contest as last year’s winner, Visiline Jepkesho, was also taking part. In 2015, Rionoripo came first in the Lisbon Marathon. She followed that success by finishing fourth at the 2016 Chicago Marathon.
The couple met at the World Junior Championships in Athletics in 2010. They got married in 2014 when Lonyangata moved back to Kenya for coaching lessons. And they’re not selfish with their love as they help pay school fees for children in Eldoret, Kenya.
Aww. We can't get enough of this cuteness.
