This Artist Is Capturing Contemporary Nigerians In A Renaissance Light
ART X Lagos is West Africa’s first international art fair, and we at Konbini will be profiling a few talented artists set to exhibit at the upcoming event, which will run from November 2 to November 4.
Tega Akpokona graduated from the University of Benin with a degree in Fine and Applied Art in 2011. Since then, the talented artist has been using his training to create Renaissance-inspired oil-on-canvas paintings that address contemporary socio-economic issues in Nigeria.
In his work, Akpokona aims to capture the essence of human emotion and the way our daily lives interact with light and colour, two important media in Renaissance art. When speaking on what inspires him, he depicts the sheer scope of his subjects, saying:
"Life is the only term broad enough to fully describe what inspires me."
In 2016 he held his first solo exhibition, Timeless at Terra Kulture, which introduced many to his thought-provoking art. His pieces include paintings of Nigeria’s impoverished populations, expressive portraits of her people and commercial activities, which dominate Akpokona's interests.
You can find more of his paintings on his Instagram.
You will be able to see Akpokona's stunning work in person at the upcoming ART X Lagos, along with a bunch of other incredibly talented artists. You can learn more about the exciting event and get your tickets right here.
