50 Artists Pay Tribute To Studio Ghibli's Legendary Director Hayao Miyazaki

Anime enthusiasts worldwide may be most familiar with the work of Hayao Miyazaki from his 2001 animated film Spirited Away. The fantasy/mystery movie earned Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Awards in 2002 and made history in 2003 by becoming the first anime film to win an American Academy Award.

Rightfully so, the famed film director, producer, manga artist and co-founder of Studio Ghibli is celebrated today for continuously innovating in the world of anime art. The most recent form of admiration comes in a 50+ person group art show at San Francisco's Spoke Art gallery.

The Miyazaki Art Show celebrates the work of Hayao Miyazaki by bringing together over 50 artists working in various mediums from around the world.

Each artist was instructed to create a piece inspired by a Studio Ghibli film, taking visual and thematic queues from titles such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo to lesser-known works like The Wind Rises and Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess.

The show is like the icing on the cake to an already exciting year for Miyazaki and the Studio Ghibli team.

Earlier this month, Amazon Prime debuted the first trailer for the English language version of the studio's animated series Sanzoku no Musume Ronia, which has been running exclusively in Japan since its debut in October 2014. The 26-episode series adaptation of a Swedish children’s was officially unveiled on Amazon Prime just last week.
