Over the last two years, Falana's craft has been a hot topic, scoring her features in prestigious international magazines like Vogue and The New Yorker. Now, in the run-up to the release of her upcoming EP, Chapter One, the singer has released the first single off the project, "Ride Or Die".
We were first introduced to Falana's great voice on her 2014 EP, Things Fall Together. In 2016, she garnered favourable reception from Nigerians due to her electric performances at her concert series, Falana Uncover'd, which saw her infuse her unique style with elements of afropop.
Now, she's finally released new music after four years, and it's fantastic. "Ride Or Die" is a lively song that arrests you within seconds. Against a heavily percussive beat, Falana sings about her loyalty in a relationship, explaining her position as a ride or die.
Speaking to Clash Magazine about the song, Falana said:
"Ride Or Die is song about a desire for intimacy, and sometimes our fear or inability to welcome it into our lives. We isolate ourselves despite attempts by even the most sincerest and truest love.
No matter how much we smile and pretend like something isn’t missing... we cannot thrive as human beings without intimacy... and it’s a cold world."
The video is just as engaging as the song, as it sees Falana mostly performing the track against perfectly curated backgrounds, which is very fitting to the personality she shows off on her Instagram page. We'd been gagging for new music from her for a while now, and we're glad to say that it was worth the wait.
We definitely can't wait for her upcoming EP, and until then, we'll have "Ride Or Die" on repeat!
