'Alien: Covenant' Sequel Will Focus On Artificial Intelligence, Not Aliens
Ridley Scott's infamous 1979 classic Aliens has seen a slew of equally beloved sequels since its release. Spread out over four decades, the Alien franchise is easily one of the longest running in film history. With the saga's sixth film Alien: Covenant having been released this May, many are wondering what's next for the franchise.
Luckily for fans, Covenant's sequel, Alien: Awakening is already in pre-production for a 2019 release, and the series' director Ridley Scott is dropping hints.
Notoriously, the films have all revolved around alien beings and a fight to defeat them– as the title so elegantly conveys. However, the topics of futuristic technology and artificial intelligence have been areas of focus as well– most notably in Alien: Covenant, where we see robotic villains take control.
For the series' next installment, even more emphasis will be put on robotics and AI as Scott explains. In conversation with the Empire Film Podcast discussing the new Alien: Awakening film, Scott tells us why Xenomorphs will be making less of an appearance in exchange for more focus on artificial intelligence :
“I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over. But what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by AI’s.
The world that the AI might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one”.
So there you have it! Mr. Scott has spoken. Aliens are out and AI is in for this next leg of the Alien series. Who can even say what may be the focal point for the series another four decades from now.
