Forest Whitaker Plays A New York Mafia Boss In The Teaser For 'Godfather of Harlem'

The American actor plays Bumpy Johnson, a gangster who ruled over New York in the 1950s.

Several months after his appearance in Empire, Forest Whitaker is returning to the small screen, and this time he'll do so in a starring role. In Godfather of Harlem, he'll play the notorious Bumpy Johnson, a gangster who changed the face of the New York district in the mid-20th century. In the first teaser for the series from Epix, we meet Bumpy just after his release from prison, as the fallen godfather prepares to take back control of his city. But in order to complete his vendetta, Bumpy will have to take on the powerful Genovese family.

Forest Whitaker will star alongside Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the Kingpin in Daredevil. In Godfather of Harlem, he'll be playing Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, a petty thug from the working class neighborhoods of the Big Apple, who ended up ruling the Genovese empire from 1981 to 2005. The teaser released by Epix introduces the characters and the social context in which the series is set, and also reveals the presence of Malcolm X, played by Nigel Thatch, who already played him in the film Selma.

Godfather of Harlem was co-written by Chris Brancato, the co-creator of Narcos. We don't yet know when the series will be released, but it should be sometime in 2019. In the meantime, we'll be seeing Forest Whitaker in City of Lies, the biopic about Russell Poole and the unresolved case of the murders of Tupac and Notorious B.I.G.
