A 25th Century Update Of The Tarot Card
The artist duo 25th Century have just released a spectacular new photo series. Always in search of inspiration, the duo looked to the ancient art of tarot, reinterpreting it with a contemporary twist. The series is called The Tarot and incorporates photographs into an original card game.
Behind the project is Ayla El Moussa, co-founder of 25th Century who began the series by immersing herself in books on tarot. She told Konbini how the project started out without a clear direction, but she spent two weeks studying the ins and outs of the trade before working out how to reinterpret these cards through her camera.
"It's a cyclical project. I hope to get to know the whole world better and also get to know myself through the symbols and the divine messages that we can read in tarot cards. Tarot illuminates hidden doors to our inner being and is a powerful tool to get to know one's psyche."
Each tarot card is accompanied with an explanation of the symbol that it's hiding to make the cards accessible to everyone. There is a desire to render the art more accessible. The modernisation through photography is also a manifestation of this desire to revolutionize the art of tarot, transposing into a world far from the old fashioned colours and drawings of tradition.
In high contrast, these portraits of female allegory are illustrated through geometric compositions, with a real attention to the costumes and textures, as well as the figures that belong to the four tarot families. Wands, Pentacles, Swords and Cups.
The four groups compose what is called the Minor Arcana. Throughout this series El Moussa has taken it upon herself to represent the four groups, taking into account their astrological elements.
It's your turn to draw your cards.
