We announced it last year: green cards would make their debut in Italy and reward players who showed fair play. Well this project is now a reality: the first green card was distributed this weekend in Serie B.

As stated on the website Serie B News, referee Marco Mainardi showed it to Cristian Galano, during the match between Virtus Entella and Vicenza.

Picture this: at the 53rd minute, the referee awarded a corner to Vicenza. Galano admitted that the defender had not touched the ball and the corner was transmuted into a goal kick. Now that’s proper play.

However, as you can see on the game sheet displayed on the Serie B official website, the little green emoji is actually still missing. We can’t wait for it to be properly introduced...

The Italian league said last year that the players with the most green cards would get a reward at the end of the season.
