"Rick and Morty" May Force McDonalds To Bring Back The Szechuan Sauce

Rick and Morty have made their triumphant return – and the internet has descended into chaos.

As the Season Three premiere – "The Rickshaw Rickdemption" – aired on Adult Swim this weekend, fan sites and forums erupted with new memes, quotes and jokes.

And because it featured in the episode, thousands upon thousands of people have become instantly obsessed with a short-lived McDonalds dipping sauce from the 1990s.

The two-decade-old Szechuan McNugget sauce was a running joke in the impromptu release.

Rick is seen ordering a bunch of it at a drive-thru in a dreamscape before outlining his passion for the discontinued dip (and his dismay at its current availability).

"In 1998, [McDonalds] had this promotion for the Disney film, Mulan, where they created a new sauce for the McNuggets called Szechuan sauce," he explains.

"It's delicious. And then they got rid of it. And now it's gone."

Since then, loads of people have taken to Twitter asking the fast-food chain to bring back the sauce.

Reddit have launched an AMA (Ask Me Anything) with "Someone who has tried McDonald's Szechuan sauce" (who describes its taste as "Sweet and Sour with some BBQ").

And a petition calling on McDonalds to "Bring back the chicken nugget Szechuan sauce" gained more than 14,000 signatures in just two days.

It's been a relentless campaign – which has already sparked an unusual response from the restaurant.

Series creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland also took to Twitter, saying: "Please let us gain enough cultural influence to force McDonald's into bringing back that fucking sauce."

And it certainly seems like the show's cult following has the power to make that happen.

But if you can't be bothered to wait for McDonalds to cave-in, there is a full recipe online.

Wubba lubba dub dub.
