It's time to get serious. After numerous twists, hesitations and calls from fans over the last few months, a spin-off of Batman about the origins of the Joker with Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the bad guy will finally begin filming, reports The Hollywood Reporter. In the end, the actor accepted Warner's offer.

(Joaquin Phoenix gives the thumbs up!)

According to Gizmodo, which also obtained the information, filming will begin in New York from September, despite originally being scheduled for May. Todd Phillips (Very Bad Trip) will direct the film which he co-wrote with Scott Silver, best-known as the screenwriter of 8 Mile.

While no release date has yet been announced, we're delighted to learn that Warner has given the green light to the film, which Hollywood Reporter described as "the exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale".

The American media outlet also confirmed that with Martin Scorsese as producer, the film has secured a budget of 55 million dollars. A sum which, although sizable, is lower than the budgets of most superhero films.

As a reminder, another film about the Joker starring Jared Leto will be released simultaneously.
