Video: 'True Detective' Returns To Its Roots In Season 3
Can Mahershala Ali save the dying franchise?
That is the question. We think he can, after seeing the new images of Season 3 of True Detective released by HBO. As in Season 1, which relaunched the career of a certain Matthew McConaughey, we've followed the life of a detective at the end of his tether, haunted by a case for decades, for several seasons now. The life of Wayne Hays was turned upside down by the disappearance of two children in the 1980s. He tries to put together the scraps of evidence in this obscure case, which implicates several different people, including his teammate Roland West, played by Stephen Dorff.
Following a second season set in urban surroundings, this third installment returns to a more natural environment: the Ozark mountains in Arkansas. In this latest trailer, Mahershala Ali appears in every scene, made up to reflect the different time periods. Will his performance, which seems exciting, revive a franchise which had its moment of glory in 2014?
In other words, although it will be interesting to see the evolution of a tortured black male character (from Don Draper to Walter White, antiheroes have all been white, with the exception of Idris Elba in Luther), the hero of a detective series spanning several decades, doesn't this type of show focusing on missing children and tortured men (don't worry, the trailer also shows several female characters) belong to the past? You'll have to wait until January 13, when Season 3 will be launched on HBO, to start finding out.
