The Live Action Movie 'The Little Mermaid' Now Has Its Ariel

Singer Halle Bailey will play the famous mermaid in the Disney film!

You might know her as half of Chloe x Halle, the young R'n'B group which Beyoncé took under her wing. But now, she's about to become an actress too. Halle Bailey has announced on Twitter that she will be playing Ariel in the Disney live action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The news also confirms that the project is still in the pipeline, that it'll be directed by Rob Marshall (the man behind the most recent Mary Poppins) and that filming should be starting before too long. The singer joins Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina and most likely Melissa McCarthy in a four-star cast. But as you might have suspected, that's not what people are talking about the most... unfortunately.

On the one hand, numerous "fans" have expressed their outrage at the choice of a young black woman to play Ariel, the mermaid represented in the 1989 cartoon by a young woman with white skin and bright red hair, labeling it as "Blackwashing"…

On the other, many internet users are amazed by this reaction, reminding us that Ariel is not a historic character and that it's not a matter of "remaining true to history" — she's a mermaid, a mythological creature.

Filming should begin in early 2020 and we're actually quite intrigued to see how this live action reworking of the original movie will play out!
