Surprise: The Peter Pan Universe Is Back In This First Trailer For 'Wendy'
Peter Pan, the mermaids, the pirates and the Lost Boys are all present and correct.
After producing Give Me Liberty, Benh Zeitlin is now set to tackle Wendy, a reworking of the classic novel Peter Pan from the perspective of the young heroine. The director, who has already directed young children in the critically acclaimed Beasts of the Southern Wild, will once again be working with a cast of kids. His sister Eliza Zeitlin will be writing the screenplay.
In this first trailer, the leading actress, Devin France, reads J. M. Barrie's classic novel Peter Pan. Shortly after, she is transported to an imaginary island where time works in a strange way. Mermaids, pirates, Lost Boys... The film from Twentieth Century Fox plunges us back into the world of Peter Pan. The only characters missing from the trailer are Captain Hook and Tinkerbell.
Unveiling vast plains and towering mountains, the director takes us on a journey into a fairy tale universe. Wendy will face numerous dangers as she tries to protect her family. The actress confessed on Fox's YouTube channel that she'd worked on the film for "almost five years".
Since the release of Beasts of the Southern Wild in 2012, Benh Zeitlin had largely disappeared from cinema. Premiering at Cannes, the film won the Caméra d'Or before taking home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. It was later nominated in four categories at the Oscars – Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director.
Wendy, which we'll be able to enjoy in 2020, looks set to be a spectacular comeback for the director. While we wait, you can feast your eyes on this magnificent poster for the movie:
