RuPaul's Drag Race has undoubtedly set off the career of many queens with the latest news coming from Violet Chachki, the winner of the show's seventh season and, as of now, the first-ever drag queen to star in a major women's lingerie campaign.
Donning her signature burlesque-inspired makeup and wigs, Chachki (real name Jason Dardo) is front and center of Playful Promises' new Bettie Page lingerie and loungewear line. Advertising itself under the slogan "Never the Girl Next Door," the collection features corsets, bustiers, bullet bras, high-waisted briefs and satin robes that Violet herself called a "vintage lover's must-have."
Chachki wasn't an accidental choice to be the face of this campaign. The coveted drag artist and burlesque performer has been citing the late pin-up model Bettie Page as one of her main inspirations. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Chachki said:
"She was a huge inspiration for my drag character. I often tell people that when I started drag, I was basically just cosplaying as Bettie Page. This campaign is really a full circle moment for me!"
A huge personal milestone no doubt, the feature in Playful Promises' campaign is also a win for the drag community as a whole, Chachki believes. The drag queen believes that providing visibility and opportunities for diversity is a step in the right direction for the fashion industry: "Visibility and just simply taking up space in media lead to questions, which lead to conversation, which lead to progressive thought and change."
As Billboard points out, before Chachki there were other drag queens – including Australian Marie Claire – who modeled women's lingerie. However, Violet is the first one to star in an international campaign. You can shop the collection here!
