Soundwave Tattoos by Skin Motion are the result of art, technology, and a bright idea coming together to create a whole new augmented reality tattoo experience – tattoos you can actually hear! Whether it's your favorite song or the voice of a loved one, you'll be able to wear it –literally – on your skin and play it back whenever you want.
Founder Nate Siggard, a tattoo artist based in LA, got the idea when two friends got inked with the opening line from Elton John's Tiny Dancer. Siggard's girlfriend casually commented it would be cool if you could listen to it, and that was enough for Nate to start cooking up an idea in his mind.
He realized he could make it happen and did a soundwave tattoo on himself with the voice of his girlfriend and baby. He posted the video on Facebook and it quickly went viral, with thousands of people inquiring on how to get one.
So Nate turned this into a business idea and Skin Motion was born.
Here's how it works: the app/website generate a sound wave pattern out of any one-minute song or audio. Once you get your design, you can get it tattooed with a certified Skin Motion tattoo artist.
Twenty-four hours after you get your ink done, Skin Motion animate the overlay and add it to the app so you could play the original audio file attached to the tattoo as many times as you want. Nate gives a demonstration on how it works in the following video:
The app is in development right now and will be launched in June 2017. Right now, the company is working on building their network by partnering with tattoo artists around the world who will be trained and certified to perform Soundwave Tattoos.
Currently, it's not a general soundwave tattoo reader, it only works with Skin Motion designs. However, Nate says they are working on expanding the tech so it would read already existing sound wave tattoos.
