Soulful singer Sam Smith just announced to fans and the world that he is gender non-binary. The 25-year-old UK-born singer-songwriter told The Sunday Times "No" when questioned on whether or not he feels like a cisgender man, adding:
“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man.”
Smith has grown to see monstrous success over the last several years, producing commercial hit after hit after the release of his 2014 debut LP In the Lonely Hour, which boasted the his breakout hit, "Stay With Me."
In the years since, Smith has become a beacon of light for the crosshairs of pop and soul, but also an equally beloved figure within the queer community. Explaining further, he tells The Sunday Times:
“People don’t know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn. There was one moment in my life when I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really.”
Smith touches on his continued love for drag, adding explaining that whenever he's in Sydney, Australia, he hits up drag shop House of Priscilla. “Oh, my god, I just buy everything—heels, dresses,” he says. “We have a great time.”
Fiercely bold in his teen years, the Grammy-winning singer explains he'd daily attend school in a full face of makeup, stylized with traditionally 'feminine' attire — "eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for two and a half years. I got teased a lot for it. But there were also people respecting me for walking around like that in my school.”
Just ahead of the release of his forthcoming full-length LP, Smith has unveiled another satiating ballad with his new single, "To Good At Goodbyes."
Currently, Smith is rumored to be dating 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn, who came out last month via an Instagram post.
Smith’s sophomore album, The Thrill of It All, is due out November 3, with a North American arena tour det to take off June 18, 2018.
