In cheesy news today: Neapolitan pizza tossing has been granted world heritage status by UNESCO, United Nations' education, scientific and cultural body.
Traditionally known as "Pizzaiuolo," it is the "culinary practice comprised of four different phases relating to the preparation of the dough and its baking in a wood-fired oven, involving a rotatory movement by the baker." In other words, the stuff happening in the video below.
Originating from Naples, Italy, the art of pizzaiuolo requires skill and dedication and has been passed down generations for years. According to UNESCO, "the element fosters social gatherings and intergenerational exchange" with younger apprentices learning from accredited masters or their families.
It is, in fact, so important to the local community, that there is even an Association of Neapolitan Pizzaiuoli that organizes courses on the history, instruments and techniques of pizza making in order to ensure its viability. The UNESCO intangible world heritage status will undoubtedly help in preserving this artisanal technique.
The decision was made after nearly 2 million people signed a petition to support Naples' application to the UN. As the Local points out, the intangible heritage list already included more than 350 traditions from Spanish flamenco dancing to Turkish oil wrestling. Who's next in line?
