US dietician Chelsey Amer has just seriously upped her chances of winning a popularity contest with the revelation that a slice of pizza could actually be a better option to kick start the day than a bowl of sugary cereal.

"You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories", Amer recently explained to the Evening Standard. Our new hero then goes on to state that while the foodstuffs provide around the same calorific value, pizza "packs a much larger protein punch" which should keep you full and "boost satiety throughout the morning".

Of course the registered dietician is not saying that pizza should be our go-to for the first meal of the day and it obviously depends what kind of toppings you're piling on (clearly an oily base oozing with cheese and pepperoni isn't going to have the same benefits as a cauliflower version piled up with vegetable toppings).

The same obviously goes for the type of cereal you're eating. According to another diet expert Priya Tew, a wholegrain variety with low fat milk and fruit on top will "set you up for the day" pretty nicely. As usual, take the advice with a pinch of common sense and you'll be fine. And, most importantly, if you want to have a slice of pizza for breakfast every now and then, don't beat yourself up.
