This Initiative Replaces Billboards With Beautiful Art By Emerging Creatives

SaveArtSpace is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit on a mission to beautify the landscapes of cities across the U.S. by replacing ads with local artists' work.

Created by photographers Travis Rix and Justin Aversano, the initiative transforms billboards and pay phone booths in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Louisville, Kentucky into somewhat of an urban gallery that provides artists and the local community with the chance to display their creations in public spaces.

It all started in 2015, and in only two years' time, the duo managed to "intervene" 61 spaces. Rix and Aversano focus mainly on emerging and underprivileged artists – by pairing them up with more established names, SaveArtSpace offers a unique chance for these young talents to get massive exposure.

"It's become a way for new talent to be introduced to the world."

The project collects donations on their website so they could legally rent the ad slots. During summer 2017, the initiative worked on an all-women exhibition in the Lower East side in NYC inspired by the ever-evolving feminist movement The Future is Female.

The exhibition was curated by five female artists, who selected works they felt represented womanhood in the 21st century and challenged traditional views on femininity. Elise R. Peterson, one of the artists whose work was featured in the exhibit, commented on the importance of being able to show her work at such a large scale:

"I think it’s so important for art to be accessible to everyone. [P]eople can walk down the street and see something beautiful or something inspiring or something provocative."
