Ignacio Torres is a Texan photographer with multiple talents. A frequent collaborator with brands like Vans and Steve Madden, he also creates his own particularly striking photo series.
In the series entitled Stellar, he takes us into a mysterious intergalactic world that mixes 3D effects and stardust.
Speaking with Fastcodesign, Torres says he developed an interest in "our celestial ancestry" when he was in college. At the time, he was taking several astronomy courses and started watching Carl Sagan's Cosmos:
"At the same time, I was obsessed with the stylistic imagery in Alejandro Jodorowsky films, which mostly consisted of desert landscapes."
So he decided to combine desert landscapes and the Cosmos-inspiration by shooting photos of friends among the cacti in El Paso while being sprinkled with flour and confetti.
"The process of creating the imagery was an adventure in itself. It was always a battle against time because I was relying on the brevity of the sunsets to create the right mood."
As he explains on his website, his starry gifs are also inspired by the popular theory that human beings are made of cosmic material. Some say we are made up of star particles, what remains after a star dies:
I created imagery that showcased this cosmic birth through the use of dust and reflective confetti to create galaxies. The models organic bodily expressions as they are frozen in time between the particles suggest their celestial creation.
In addition, space and time is heightened by the use of three-dimensional animated gifs. Their movement serves as a visual metaphor to the spatial link we share with stars as well as their separateness through time."
