Artist Fuses Herself With Various Animals In Haunting Self-Portraits

After taking a self-portrait with her pet dog, Hungarian artist Flora Borsi realized that its eye looked like her own. This coincidence inspired the young artist to stage self-portraits and "melt" herself with various animals.

Flora Borsi is a long-standing photography artist who has mastered all aspects of the creative process: she applies her own makeup, decides on what she’s going to wear for the shoot, sets up her studio and shoots with a remote trigger before passing to the digital manipulation stage.

Each image is the result of a massive amount of work because although the actual shoot may last an hour or so, it is followed by twenty hours of retouching (and we’re not taking into account the research, the lighting tests, the hairdressing and so on). As Borsi told Bored Panda:

"I observed the angle, lighting, colour and texture. The most typical things on each animal. I made a moodboard, I was inspired by makeup artists, and hairdressers' earlier works found on web."

All this work ended up in the elaboration of a photographic series entitled Animayed, a collection of extremely well-crafted images in which the artist's face merges with that of an animal.

Through a subtle play of perspective, the eye of the animal becomes that of the photographer, underlining her concept of communion with the animal world:

"I was amazed by the peculiarity of each species. I realized how perfect the Nature is, and the similarity between humans and animals.

I love animals, and somehow I wanted to show that we are very similar to them. I also wanted to show how unique and special they are, one by one. From the fish to the cat."

The physical transformations the artist goes through, rendering her unrecognizable from one image to the next, are impressive. It’s high-quality work graphic that brings together woman, animal and poetry.
