You Can Now Download Crash Bandicoot's Most Difficult Level For Free

Let's just say right away, Crash Bandicoot was not a difficult game. Sure, every now and then a passage would come up that could get a little tricky, especially after spending long hours of pretty much breezing through the story, but it was never anything insurmountable – especially compared to horrendously difficult games like Ghosts’n’Goblins or more recently, the sadistic Dark Souls.

But since the release of the very first edition of the game in 1996, Crash Bandicoot has been keeping a little secret. There was a hidden level included with the original CD-ROM that got cut from the game at the last minute by a grumpy team member who thought it was too hard to win. Its name? Stormy Ascent.

Until now, the delightfully difficult level could only be played by people with cheat code discs and cartridges (Action Replay, we haven't forgotten about you).

But now Activision has decided to take advantage of the monumental success of the remastered edition of the game for PS4, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, to offer Stormy Ascent for free download until August 19 in the PlayStation store

On July 20, Taylor Kurosaki, the developer who originally created the level, published a blog post about how it all started and what motivated Naughty Dog to remove it from the game at the last minute.

"I was new to games and game design back then; I didn’t have a great understanding of a difficulty curve. This level was so close to the end of the game and, you guessed it, it ended up being insanely difficult.

As in, so difficult that it was hard for me, and I’m the guy who knew exactly how far Crash could jump, how late a player could take-off, and so on."

But now, even common mortals can take a shot at navigating the slippery platforms, impossible timings and perfectly placed enemies of the level, and remember that in the not-so-distant past, there was a time when video games could really drive you insane. But rest assured, it's not totally impossible. A few heroes have managed to successfully beat the level
