After the superb Ex Machina, director Alex Garland is back with Annihilation, another sci-fi flick starring Oscar Isaac. This time around, the actor will play Natalie Portman's husband in what is one of the most anticipated movies of 2019.
The plot revolves around a biologist who embarks on a research project after her husband returns from a similar mission in a bizarrely altered state. Landing in an unknown location, Portman's character soon finds herself confronted with a series of weird phenomena.
The trailer portrays Natalie Portman as an adventurer haunted by a vision she cannot explain. According to Isaac, the film will be "very weird and very beautiful."
A couple of days ago, Entertainment Weekly dropped the first image of the movie which sees Portman dive into the mouth of what appears to be an alligator. As Garland explains of the photo:
"It is their first tangible encounter with something strange. The alligator has physical elements to it that should not belong on an alligator. They’re starting to get their heads around how weird the place is."
Annihilation is an adaptation of the "New Weird" fantasy trilogy by VanderMeer and is taken from the first volume, entitled Southern Reach. It tells the story of a science team – a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a land surveyor – as they touch down in a deserted land called Zone X.
As the story details, eleven teams have been previously been sent to the zone, only to be wiped out by cancer, suicide or psychotic episodes and or strange disappearances – which explains why everyone's wearing bio-hazard suits in the new trailer.
Annihilation will hit cinemas on February 23, 2018. Let's hope a few more trailers will have given us a few more clues by then.
