Rising star Lil Peep, real name Gustav Åhr, has died at the age of 21, it has sadly emerged. The rapper's official cause of death has not yet been confirmed but multiple sources are reporting that he died following a drug overdose.
First shared by fans on forum sites, the news was soon made official by two of the New York musician's representatives.
Chase Ortega, one of the late rapper's managers, expressed his sadness upon hearing the news, adding that, unfortunately, he had been "expecting this call for a year."
Despite his young age, Lil Peep had emerged as one of the leading figures of a kind of hybrid rap mixing hip-hop influences with emo sounds. The experimental artist was also not afraid to approach hard-hitting subjects, such as suicide or drug addiction, in his music.
Last August, he released his first album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1, following a series of mixtapes, which gained him notoriety in the hip-hop world. Hailed as 'one to watch' by multiple music publications, Lil Peep had been performing on a nationwide tour when he died.
