'Insecure' Creator Issa Rae Wants To Make A TV Show For Black Teenagers

Issa Rae is really taking the 'For Us By Us' narrative seriously, by pitching a television show as part of a campaign with the New Yorker. She discusses a show potentially named 'Ladera Heights 90041', which she explains would be like Gossip Girl or 90210, but with black teenagers. The show would include the main character Lil Richie, who is tired of his excesses as well as supplemental characters that add to the narrative, all played by black youth.

It's almost certain that after the release of Jay Z's "Moonlight" music video she heard the cries for a black remake of an already existing television show that comprised of mainly white people. The music video was a remake of the opening credits from the show Friends with an all-black cast including Issa Rae, Tiffany Haddish, Jerrod Carmichael, Lil Rel Howery and Tessa Thompson.

It would be nice to see a show about black teenagers being presented in a different light, other than just being troublesome or a charity case. We don't know whether this pitch means that it will happen for sure, but we know that if it does, we will definitely be tuning in!
