Disney Princesses may all exist within worlds of common tropes and themes, but it turns out they have something else in common as well. From Cinderella, to Belle, down to Ariel, Elsa, Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, all these iconic characters are adorned in blue.
"When you think of every Disney heroine—Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine—they're all wearing blue! It's a thing. 'Disney Blue.'"
The observation is pretty on point, especially when considering the earliest renditions of the girls. The signature look doesn't come by coincidence, however, as it's the color of trust. When looking at the psychology of color and emotions, blue induces calm and serenity while instilling a sense of confidence.
It's the shade of the sea and the sky, inspiring feelings of familiarity, trust, loyalty, integrity and responsibility. Cool blue is also said to hold a conservative undertone, a safe one– and can also be associated with being aloof. Blue also tends to suppress the appetite, as there aren't many blue foods associated with nature; think about it.
Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Color Institute explained to Allure that female empowerment holds a strong role in the continued blue inclusion.
"You're adding a bit of power to the character by giving her the blue. It's a very subtle way of saying, 'Yeah, but young women, young girls, can be empowered, too.
It's dependable. It's reliable. It might cloud up, but we know it's there."
Fascinating, am I right? No matter how old and washed we get, our childhood still has a way of creeping up and teaching us something new.
