Software programmer-turned-environmentalist, Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola has been having a pretty great year. Just four months ago, she won the prestigious 'International Grand Prize' at Le Monde's Smart Cities Innovation Awards for her recycling startup, Wecyclers.
Wecyclers collects waste from low-income communities and rewards households with redeemable points that can later be exchanged for prizes – with the aim of promoting recycling within the country.
Now, she has been appointed by the Lagos state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, as the new General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).
LASPARK, which was launched five years ago, was created to make Lagos greener and healthier, through the creation and maintenance of functional and operational parks and gardens; as well as the planting and maintenance of trees.
About why Bilikiss was chosen, the Lagos State Government stated on their social media accounts:
"Adebiyi-Abiola is coming into the saddle with a remarkable private sector experience and a passion for the environment, particularly in the waste recycling sector."
Since LASPARK was launched, the agency has established more parks and gardens – reportedly maintaining over 300 of them statewide – and we know Bilikiss will bring the dedicated spark she brought to Wecylcers to this project as well.
