Nigeria was the talk of the 2018 Winter Olympics, thanks to the country’s women’s bobsled team, which made history as the first out of Africa.
Now, the Bobsled and Skeleton Federation of Nigeria (BSFN) is poised to set another historic precedent, as they have announced a roster of athletes to the first men’s bobsled team from Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
The idea for a men’s bobsled team was proposed by Osazee Ulamen, a bodybuilder and bobsled enthusiast. When the federation decided to take it up, Ulamen recruited Aaron Schernig and Elias Schernig to the team.
All three athletes are based in Innsbruck, Austria, which is regarded as a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. So, finding the right spots for training won’t be a problem for them.
While the team is gearing up for the next edition of the Winter Olympics, which will take place in Beijing in 2022, BSFN president, Solomon Ogba is hoping their participation will help project bobsled and skeleton in Nigeria, and encourage more people to get involved.
