In most developed and developing countries, tourism has greatly enriched their economies – thus becoming one of their major sources of income and a pillar of commerce; which begs the question, why hasn't Nigeria caught the tourism bug?
While Nigeria has loads of potentially great tourist attractions, the biggest issue is a serious lack of visibility. This is the problem Chiamaka Obuekwe has decided to solve with her company, Social Prefect Tours (SPT).
SPT is a travel brand which organizes group tours, school excursions, corporate retreats, holiday packages and also offers tour guide services within Africa – especially in Nigeria – to educate people about the beauty within.
Speaking with Punch about what inspired her to start SPT, Chiamaka said:
"We [want to] encourage Nigerians and even foreigners to explore our rich and diverse cultural heritage as well as our enthralling and beautiful landscapes.
Local tourism is very important for any country to grow. Sadly, Nigeria does not take tourism seriously."
