Any Nigerian who has ever hopped on the fitfam train at some point can agree that trying to figure out which food products make the 'healthy' cut and which ones don't is a stressful nightmare – especially when you've never had to consider stuff like that before.
A platform for Nigerians by Nigerians
This is what inspired Ebenezer Anifowose to create Food Facts NG – an online database that collates nutritional and health information about food products in Nigeria.
The platform provides the products' ingredient list, its additives, its nutrient information (including the number of calories), its allergens and even its NAFDAC number (because you can never be too careful).
Food Facts is crowd sourced and allows certified contributors to update and edit the information that's available on the site – as well as adding more products to the platform's ever-growing list.
According to Ebenezer, he created the platform to enable users to make smarter, healthier decisions. In the near future, Ebenezer plans to incorporate a standardized 'nutrition rating system' to further guide people in their food choices.
