Since Odion Ighalo’s solid performance for Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON qualifiers, we’ve discovered more reasons to forgive his multiple World Cup fumbles. While the striker is making steady strides, the same can’t be said for his club, Changchun Yatai, which recently went into relegation.
With the club facing this huge setback, Ighalo is now the interest of clubs across Asia and Europe, but the most exciting news we’ve heard about his possible future is that FC Barcelona is very interested in signing him.
When the 29-year-old moved from Watford to the Chinese Super League back in 2017, we thought there was no way he’d come back to Europe, given that most footballers who move to China often stay put there.
However, with the January transfer window open, Sport reports that Ighalo has a chance of not just getting back to Europe, but getting a contract from Barça. He’s being considered as a low-cost replacement for Munir El Haddadi, who’s on loan; and Denis Suárez, who’ll be leaving the club soon.
Before Barça’s interest, a number of clubs in China have shown interest in signing Ighalo. Considering that he moved there for a fee of around £20 million, it’s hard to see any of them piquing his interest. So, we expect him to grab a Barça deal with both hands once he’s presented with one.
