2018 was a really great year for African football, thanks to the stars who delivered for both their countries and clubs. Well, France Football Magazine, which organizes the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, has named its 2018 Best African XI team, and Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi made the cut.
The magazine selected the 21-year-old as one of the three midfielders because of his impressive Premier League stats, in terms of tackles and balls recovered. It appears his selection also has something to do with his nomination for the 2018 CAF Youth Player of the Year award.
Ndidi, who was named alongside big names like Salah and Mané, may not be the best in Nigeria (or even his club, Leicester City) but he has achieved a 71% tackle success rate, 169 recoveries and 42 interceptions this Premier League season. That’s much more than we can say for some other players.
