A New 'Star Wars' Trilogy Is In The Works At Disney

If you were worried about soon having to wave goodbye to the Star Wars universe, you've now got Disney to thank for saving your bacon.

As Lucasfilm revealed yesterday, Rian Johnson (the man behind the upcoming eighth movie) is about to start work on a brand new Star Wars trilogy, the first volume of which he will be writing and directing.

Few details about the project have been dropped by this point but we do know it is set to introduce new characters from as yet unexplored corners of the galaxy, and that it will be separate from the Skywalker saga.

It will therefore be a little more in depth than films like Rogue One or Solo which only offer a snapshot view of separate subplots.

The project is now in development and, by the sounds of things, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is pretty chuffed with the news. As she said of the upcoming trilogy's director:

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

According to this Reddit thread, the stars of the saga have also been singing the praises of Rian Johnson after completing work on the most recent movie. Let's hope that means he's up to the task of essentially filling George Lucas's shoes.

In the meantime, you can catch The Last Jedi in cinemas from December 13
