As music consumption continues to grow digitally, more and more streaming platforms are popping up. In 2015, Boomplay, an online streaming platform founded in Nigeria, joined the likes of Apple Music and Tidal, offering African subscribers music-specific content from around the continent.
As did Spotify, Google, YouTube and other data compiling services, Boomplay has released their statistical summary of 2018, listing the top 10 artists of 2018, as well as other rankings.
Based on the number of plays artists accumulated throughout the year, Boomplay's top ten artists of 2018 is led by gospel singer, Tope Alabi, whose album was also the most played. It comes as no surprise that Davido is the most played afropop star, coming in at number two.
Clearly, Simi's incredible debut album, Simisola left an unyielding mark amongst Boomplay listeners, as her album was ranked fifth most-played album of 2018 — although it was released the year prior. That, along with her 2018 singles, helped push her to the number three spot.
