As an artiste, Iyanya is a pretty hard man to pin down. Since he won the first season of Project Fame West Africa almost a decade ago, he has dropped three studio albums, each presenting us with a different side of his artistry – all with varying degrees of success.
With his surprise Mavin Records' deal, we got his first EP, Signature – a scattershot body of work that got us wondering if the singer had lost his way. Well, with his newest single "Iyanu (Holy Water)", Iyanya thankfully seems to be back on track.
Produced by Black Jesse, "Iyanu (Holy Water)" is easily the best song Iyanya has had in a long while – flooring every song on his Signature EP. The groovy afropop banger is reminiscent of the kind of music Iyana won over our hearts with on his sophomore album, Desire.
As great as the song is, the lyrics are actually pretty telling too. While rumours circulate about him being unhappy with his Mavin Records' deal, Iyanya makes it pretty clear on the song: "No time to regret/To the top I dey head/Very soon, things go fall in place."
The music video is definitely the least impressive part of the whole package. While his much weaker 2017 songs, "Bow For You", "Hold On" and "Not Forgotten", all got pretty solid videos, it's sad that his best song all year is saddled with this uninspired slog.
Weak video aside, Iyanya seems set to take back the afropop crown he held so firmly around 2013 and 2014. If his new songs are going to be as strong as "Iyanu (Holy Water)" then he might actually be able to pull it off.
