8 Memorable Fashion Moments In Nigerian Music Videos Of 2018

Musicians have long been tastemakers, and it wouldn't come as a shock to see a regular person's style mirroring that of an artist they love. Growing up in the noughties, most of our fashion tastes were dictated by what our favourite singers wore in their music videos.

In addition to being the biggest reason we spend hours falling down the YouTube rabbit hole, music videos are a significant part of our consumption of music, art and entertainment, and fashion is an integral part of any music video's appeal.

Given that this year has produced some of the best Nigerian songs we've ever had, accompanying them have been some equally great clips, which have seen a lot of our favourite artists clad in some pretty unforgettable looks.

So, from Tiwa's slayage in the "Tiwa's Vibe" video to Burna's killer style in "On The Low", here are 8 memorable fashion moments in Nigerian music videos of 2018.

"On The Low" - Burna Boy

We've previously praised Burna Boy's bolshy style, which he doesn't shy away from in his videos. Styled by his sister, he particularly stunned in the video for "On The Low", and while we might be biased because we love the song, we can't believe how good he looked throughout.

"I Dun Care" - Simi

Simi's fashion sense is usually a hot topic, and it's never really for the right reasons. Well, she decided she was going to give a middle finger to the naysayers in the Clarence Peters-directed video for "I Dun Care", as she rocked a stunning tulle dress that's still giving us wardrobe envy.

"Yo Yo" - Adekunle Gold ft Flavour

Adekunle Gold is easily the most stylish musician we have in Nigeria, and you can tell he puts in a lot of effort. While he rarely ever disappoints, we have to give a special shout-out to his latest video for the Flavour-assisted "Yo Yo", which saw him stunting harder than he ever has.

"Bad Energy" - Skepta X Wizkid

Skepta & Wizkid's video for "Bad Energy" was a vibrant celebration of Nigeria's burgeoning 'alté scene'. Featuring upcoming models, stylists and photographers, the most noteworthy scene saw fashion enthusiasts, Deto Black and DJ Wayne killing it in striking ankara and adire.

"Tiwa’s Vibe" - Tiwa Savage

2018 was the year of Tiwa Savage's glow up, and the video for "Tiwa's Vibe" showed this off in all its glory. Throughout the clip, Tiwa was dressed in several striking pieces that we ordinarily wouldn't like, however, they were very fitting to her new vibe, and we were here for it.

"Unleash" - Runtown ft. Fekky

Thanks to his stylist, Ifeanyi Nwune, you'll hardly ever catch Runtown looking dead. His chilled style is very fitting to his chilled personality, and that always comes through in his music videos. We were especially wowed by his patchwork corduroy jacket in his video for "Unleash".

"Popping Again" - Show Dem Camp

Show Dem Camp's "Popping Again" video was an ode to the streetwear scene in Nigeria, with brands like Bearded Genius, Modus Vivendii, Mr Garbe, Sammystates and more making an appearance. We loved how chilled the clothes made the video, and completely fit the vibe of the song.

"Askamaya" - Teni The Entertainer

We already know that Teni's androgynous style is as colourful as her personality, and she's never afraid to show this off in her music videos. While we're drawn to her style almost every time we see her, we were especially blown away by her iconic yellow suit in the "Askamaya" video.
