For an artist who has already dropped at least one studio album, an EP usually serves one of two purposes: releasing tracks that, for whatever reason, didn’t make the last album or teasing a brand new album cycle altogether.
While Tiwa Savage’s astonishingly cohesive Sugarcane clearly falls in the latter category, Jidenna’s recently released EP, Boomerang, seems to fall squarely in the former.
Granted, most of the songs on this six-track EP are solid enough to fit snuggly into Jidenna’s impressive debut LP, The Chief, but we honestly wouldn’t trade them for any of the tracks that made that project's final cut.
Anyway, ignoring the feeling of partaking in a leftover meal that Boomerang evokes, the EP is actually quite solid. Jidenna’s boundless charisma is still very much intact on solo songs like “Decibel” and “Boomerang”.
For the features, which are easily the EP's biggest draw, some people shine a lot brighter than others. The standouts are Tiwa Savage, serving sultry vocals on "Spy Candy"; Maleek Berry, totally bodying "Bambi Too" and Burna Boy, impressive as always on the "Little Bit More" remix.
