HBO has just renewed two of its most beloved comedy dramas, Insecure and Ballers. In the case of Insecure, it was Issa Rae, the show's creator and starring actress, who took to Twitter to announce the good news that a fourth season will be made.
This renewal comes as no surprise: although the series hasn't won huge audience numbers, it does have a devoted fanbase. And Season 3 earned excellent reviews from critics. Another boost to the series came from Issa Rae's nomination in the category of 'Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series' at the upcoming Emmy Awards.
For any of you who haven't seen the show, it tells the story of the friendship between two young black women, played by Rae and Yvonne Orji, as they navigate daily between romantic and professional lives which don't always meet their expectations.
Another comedy-drama, completely different from Insecure, has also been renewed by HBO. Ballers stars Dwayne Johnson, and has just had its fifth season confirmed. Created by Stephen Levinson, it focuses on the world of professional American football.
The actor plays Spencer Strasmore, a former star of the NFL who has swapped the football pitch for a career managing young pro players. Ballers is the most popular small screen comedy on a pay-TV network in the US. It's no surprise then that HBO has decided to renew for Season 5.
