Discover: Dayo Olatunji, The Singer-Songwriter Set To Be A Superstar

Discover is a continuous series on up-and-coming musicians you need to know. Not everyday afrobeat, sometimes, well... other stuff.

In June 2016, UK-based singer-songwriter, Dayo Olatunji (aka Dyo), won over a bunch of fans thanks to her standout work on Swedish producer, NEIKED's hit song "Sexual". Credited as a co-writer, she went on to land her first-ever Ivor Novello nomination for "Best Contemporary Song".

Well, regardless of eventually losing out to Skepta's "Man", Dyo's work on that song seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. Since Maroon 5 and SZA's collaboration, "What Lovers Do" contains an interpolation of "Sexual", she is also credited as a songwriter on that acclaimed hit.

A truly gifted songwriter and vocalist

Dyo's has been using her songwriting and singing gifts to make songs better since as far back as 2009. Under her previous stage name, Ms.D, she lent her memorable voice to UK rapper, Chip's hit song "Oopsy Daisy".

In 2013, she was credited as the featured artist and co-writer for all three of UK rapper, Wiley's hit singles from his 2013 album The Ascent, including the monster hit "Heatwave".

Speaking with M Magazine about how she got into songwriting, she said:

"Well, I didn’t start off writing. I had friends in the industry who were writing and I somehow wasn’t. They would say to me, ‘just listen to songs that you really like lyrically and focus on that’.

The more I did that the more I started to enjoy the process. I remember the first thing I did that anyone heard was 'Oopsy Daisy'.

At the time, I remember I was in the studio, did the song and didn’t think anything of it."

Dyo is also credited as a songwriter and backing vocalist on Iggy Azalea's acclaimed 2013 single, "Bounce", off the deluxe edition of her Grammy-nominated debut album, The New Classic.

Her most recent songwriting credit is on Fifth Harmony's self-titled third album, where she co-wrote the fantastic "Lonely Night". And according to Adekunle Gold's tweets and Instagram stories, they are working together on a song for his upcoming album, About 30

While we are not sure when we'll be getting a project from the talented artist – her last body of work is her 2014 EP, Resonance – we can't wait to see her star shine even brighter.

TV taught me how to feel.
