Last week, Adekunle Gold finally released his sophomore album, About 30, and the highly anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed debut, Gold, was everything we hoped it would be: fully formed and immensely magnetic.
One of the standouts off the brilliant 14-track project is "Down With You", a dreamy love song featuring UK-based singer-songwriter, Dayo Olatunji (aka Dyo) — a collaboration Adekunle Gold teased almost seven months ago.
Who is Dyo?
Back in 2016, Dyo won over a bunch of fans thanks to her stellar work on Swedish producer, NEIKED's hit song "Sexual". Credited as a co-writer, she went on to land her first-ever Ivor Novello nomination for "Best Contemporary Song".
Well, regardless of eventually losing out to Skepta's "Man", Dyo's work on that song remained the gift that kept on giving. Since Maroon 5 and SZA's collaboration, "What Lovers Do" contained an interpolation of the song, she ended up getting credited as a songwriter on that 2017 hit as well.
A truly gifted songwriter and vocalist
Dyo's has been using her songwriting and singing gifts to make songs better since as far back as 2009. Under her previous stage name, Ms.D, she lent her memorable voice to UK rapper, Chip's hit song "Oopsy Daisy".
In 2013, she was credited as the featured artist and co-writer for all three of UK rapper, Wiley's hit singles from his 2013 album, The Ascent, including the monster hit "Heatwave".
Speaking with M Magazine about how she got into songwriting, she said:
"Well, I didn’t start off writing. I had friends in the industry who were writing and I somehow wasn’t. They would say to me, ‘just listen to songs that you really like lyrically and focus on that’.
The more I did that the more I started to enjoy the process. I remember the first thing I did that anyone heard was 'Oopsy Daisy'.
At the time, I remember I was in the studio, did the song and didn’t think anything of it."
She also has songwriting credits on Iggy Azalea's Grammy-nominated debut album, The New Classic (for the acclaimed "Bounce"); Fifth Harmony's eponymous final album (for the fantastic "Lonely Night"); and M.O's recent Mr Eazi-assisted hit, "Bad Vibe".
While we are not sure when we'll be getting a project from the ridiculously talented artist – her last body of work is her 2014 EP, Resonance – we can't wait to see her star shine even brighter following her incredible performance on About 30.
