A few days ago, Davido released a new track, "Assurance" to celebrate his girlfriend, Chioma's birthday. On first listen, we weren't really enamored by the song, however, after a few listens and the recently released music video, it's definitely grown on us.
With a catchy sample of Paw Paw's "Biggie Biggie" as the pre-chorus, the song manages to grasp you within seconds and keep you interested throughout its duration. In normal Davido fashion, there's not much lyrical range, however, the catchy rhymes and the somber beat work well together.
Last year, on "Fall", Davido declared that he doesn't want to "be a player no more", and it looks like he meant it. On "Assurance", he announces his feelings for his significant other, singing "You’re the one I want oh/Before my liver start to fail/You’re the one I need oh", showing that he's really only interested in her.
Directed by Meji Alabi, the video sees Davido on holiday with his muse for the song — both reveling in their love. The video doesn't do much in addition to the song, but could be Davido's way of stamping summer time as the new cuffing season.
Normally in the dating calendar, summertime is for meaningless flings and winter is usually dubbed cuffing season. Since in Nigeria, we don't have diverse weather, and the summer months are pretty much our version of winter here, this switch up makes sense.
We're here for Nigerian men dropping the hard guy façade and unashamedly showing affection, and after this, we hope more follow suit!
