This weekend, Hulu unveiled the first images of the highly anticipated second season of The Handmaid's Tale. As a reminder, we left the Golden Globe-winning series in a pretty sorry state at the end of season one with Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss) having apparently just been whisked away by the Gilead authorities. A ray of hope did arrive, however, when Moira (Samira Wiley) managed to pass the border into Canada to find her friend's husband Luke.
Season two will see June's nightmare and her quest to find her child (and protect her unborn child) continue. By the looks of this trailer, we'll also be getting a closer look at the infamous Colonies, the vast polluted and radioactive waste-filled areas of the US where rebels of the regime – including Janine from season one – are sent.
As announced a while ago by showrunner Bruce Miller, we'll also be meeting new star, Marisa Tomei in the terrifying backdrop. As Hulu's official synopsis notes, season two will be:
"shaped by Offred’s pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. 'Gilead is within you' is a favourite saying of Aunt Lydia. In Season 2, Offred and all our characters will fight against—or succumb to—this dark truth."
All in all, it looks like we're in for an even more intense and unpredictable chapter this time around, as Elisabeth Moss recently told Entertainment Weekly: "There is literally no way that anyone can guess what happens."
Handmaid's Tale season two is set to kick off April 25 on Hulu.
