From a virtual galaxy far, far away rumours of new adventures aboard the USS Callister are starting to surface. Yup, one of our favorite Black Mirror episodes to date has made the headlines after a couple of sources dropped hints that the chapter could be getting its own spin-off show.
Taking to the TCA Press Tour to promote new series Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G., actor Jimmi Simpson, who plays Walton, revealed that we could be seeing more of the world created in episode one of season four. He said:
"I've heard little buzzes. But I don't believe anything until I'm working on set. I would love it."
Okay, so it doesn't sound like much. But that's not all! Because according to Toby Haynes, the episode's director, producer Louise Sutton has already "cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning [the episode] into a TV series".
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Haynes didn't hide his enthusiasm at the prospect of exploring the space-based instalment in more detail. He said:
"I’d love to do a TV series of "USS Callister" — it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series."
He went on to add: "I think Charlie might revisit it as a Black Mirror." All that's left to do is hope that showrunner Charlie Brooker is down for the idea of revisiting the episode in some form or another. The only potential roadblock is that there is already a Star Trek parody series in the shape of FOX's The Orville. Fingers crossed all the same.
This isn't the first time that an episode follow-up has been discussed, with rumours of "San Junipero" Easter eggs making the rounds a few months ago. That said, we're still waiting for those to materialize...
