'93 Days' And '76' Lead The AMVCA 2017 Nominations – 'A Trip To Jamaica' Shows Up Too

The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) announced their batch of 2017 nominees yesterday and it really got us wondering why this is the most coveted award by Nigerians in the film industry – when a film like A Trip To Jamaica can be nominated for 'Best Movie' alongside powerhouses like 93 Days and '76.

Granted the superior movies led the pack – with the brilliant historical drama '76 leading with 14 nominations, followed by 93 Days landing 12 – but five nominations for AY Makun's comedy hit, including one for Best Writer (how?) just seem like five too many.

What makes this list even more surprising – and almost painfully disappointing? Niyi Akinmolayan’s thoughtful, more deserving film about sexual assault, The Arbitration, only landed two nominations (and neither was for best film); even AMVCA-darling Kunle Afolayan could only muster 2 nominations for The CEO.

Thankfully the acting nominations fared a lot better, with Bimbo Akintola and Somkele Idhalama landing well-deserved nominations for their towering performances in 93 Days, and Rita Dominic finally getting some recognition for her work alongside Ramsey Nuoah in '76.
