On the movie's tenth anniversary, Juno director Jason Reitman has organised a live reading of the script featuring only the female cast members to raise money for US Planned Parenthood.
Ellen Page, Jennifer Garner and female actresses standing in for the film's male characters – played by the likes of hot babes Michael Cera and Jason Bateman – will reunite to help the reproductive health service.
The event is a direct response to Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans's attempts to gut governmental funding of the sexual health organisation; an executive order put into place earlier this year aims to cut funding from nongovernmental health organisations who provide abortions.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Reitman said:
“Like many other people, I felt like I wanted to do something. I wanted to find a way to contribute to the causes that have never felt more important. It occurred to me that I have this show that could be used as a tool to not only raise money for causes that need the help, but could serve as an opportunity for a group like Planned Parenthood to connect with an audience who can be presented with new ideas, or even an action item."
“Considering how much this election has done against women and what Planned Parenthood has done for women," he continued, "I thought it would be cool to hear this script with an all-female voice."
Taking into account Juno's stance on abortion, Reitman explained that, “If there was any confusion about whether Juno was pro-choice or pro-life, this should settle that. Juno had a choice, and that was the most important part.”
Planned Parenthood provides Americans, including the country's poorest women, with access to contraception, smear tests, health checks and cancer and STI screenings. The organisation also offers abortion in selected clinics but, contrary to popular belief (and myths from anti-abortion advocates) Planned Parenthood doesn't use government funds to pay for abortions – women often have to pay for these themselves.
The Juno script live-read will take place on April 8 at the Ace Hotel in LA.
