An elderly couple is facing charges after being found driving home for the holidays with an enormous quantity of marijuana in their car.
Busted on the roadside, 80-year-old Patrick Jiron and 83-year-old Barbara Jiron caught the attention of police who smelled the pungent odor of the raw weed wafting from the vehicle. As it turns out, there was a whopping 60 pounds of the stuff bundled up in the backseat, which the couple say they were planning to divide up as 'Christmas presents'.
The Jirons had started their journey in California where the substance is, of course, legal; unfortunately, they were then stopped in Nebraska where it is against the law to be carrying around the green stuff.
Claiming they "didn’t know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska", Patrick Jiron was nonetheless arrested for possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver. His wife Barbara was cited but wasn't jailed for unspecified medical reasons.
In a hilarious twist, the pair defended themselves by saying the weed was Christmas gifts for friends and family in Boston and Vermont, as Lieutenant Paul Vrbka of the York Country Sheriff’s Office told the York News-Times.
According to the authorities, the total street value of the load came to around $336,000 which would make for a very merry Christmas indeed. For anyone concerned about Mr Jirons, The Independent assures us that he was released from custody on Wednesday.
Fingers crossed for an invite to round to Patrick and Barbara's next year...
