Eminem's 'Stan' Is Now In The Oxford English Dictionary

Back in 2000, Eminem and Dido teamed up to create one of the greatest rap songs of the decade.

The seriously dark track told the fictional tale of Stan, a hardcore Eminem fan who, realising his idol isn't going to respond to his letters, winds up committing suicide and taking his pregnant wife with him.

The word "Stan" has since entered into pop culture to refer to obsessive fans in general. Seventeen years (eek) after the song's release, the term "Stan" has been given official recognition by the Oxford English Dictionary.

As Exclaim reports, the term is now defined by the OED as "an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity." It can apparently also be used as a verb: ie. to Stan.

The OED has also kindly offered an official origin for the term which reads: "Early 21st century: probably with allusion to the 2000 song 'Stan' by the American rapper Eminem, about an obsessed fan."

Check out the song behind it all just above.
