The first ever photo uploaded on the World Wide Web

History is full of major landmarks, well today we are going to talk about quite a special one! The first photo ever posted on the Internet. It was back in 1992, and it was a promotional shot of an all-girl comedy band called Les Horribles Cernettes. Here is the story.

first photo internet

The first ever picture posted on the World Wide Web was taken by Silvano de Gennaro, an IT developer at Cern and was uploaded online by Tim Berners-Lee back in 1992. They worked with other scientists who had invented the Web and made it public in 1991.Well I guess you can figure that this picture belong in the 90’s when you see how it’s been nicely photoshopped! According to Motherboard, the image was edited with the first version of Photoshop on a colour Macintosh. The story behind it is that Berners-Lee and his colleagues needed a guinea pig to try on a new web edition that could support photo files. And that’s when it happened: they walked to the closest desk and asked De Gennaro who happened to have this pic.

And who is this band? They are called Les Horribles Cernettes, an all-girl comedy band formed by secretaries and girlfriends of scientists working at the famous CERN lab in Geneva, Switzerland. The picture was taken during a music festival organized by CERN.

De Gennaro told Motherboard “When history happens, you don’t know that you’re in it”

Now it is for you to tell wether it is a worthy landmark in history or not…
